Minnesota State Representative Cedrick Frazier (DFL - Crystal) says he's running to become the next Hennepin County Attorney.
Frazier made that announcement Monday in a video released by his campaign.
"When I look at our legal system right now, it's clear that it continues to uphold failed policies that perpetuate cycles of violence rather than promoting true healing for victims and meaningful accountability for perpetrators," Frazier said in the video.
Frazier's announcement came with an endorsement of Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison.
Current Hennepin County Attorney Mary Moriarty announced earlier this month she wouldn't seek re-election. Her term has come with controversy with her attempts are reforming the office, with criticism she wasn't bringing enough prosecutions, some reported disagreements with Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O'Hara and other police chiefs, and even criticism from her own party.
"From the Capitol to the courtrooms, we need leadership with proximity to the issues impacting our communities in this moment we need a leader that understands that public safety starts with public trust and leadership starts with listening," Frazier added in his campaign video.
Frazier began his career as a public defender in Hennepin County and has also worked in public education. He is serving his third term in the House.
