The University of Minnesota has a new President-designate.

Dr. Rebecca Cunningham is currently the Vice President for Research and Innovation at the University of Michigan.

Cunningham beats out Cleveland State University President Laura Bloomberg and University of New Mexico Provost James Holloway.

University of Minnesota Board Chair Janie Mayeron says she's pleased regents reached a consensus.

"By that, I mean that I am confident and each of you have said that that when we all leave the room here today, while the candidate may not have been your first choice, I know that you're leaving the room here today fully supporting that candidate as if she was your first choice," explained Mayeron.

Once a contract is negotiated and finalized, Dr. Cunningham would begin her new role on July 1.

Last May, former Hormel Foods CEO Jeff Ettinger moved into the position on an interim basis, replacing President Joan Gabel, who left the role to become Chancellor at Pitt.
