Minnesota Governor Tim Walz is not running for the United States Senate now occupied by Sen. Tina Smith (DFL).

In an announcement through his spokesperson, Walz says "he loves his job as Governor," and he’s exploring the possibility of another term to "continue his work to make Minnesota the best state in the country for kids. "

"This isn't a huge surprise," says WCCO Political Analyst Blois Olson. "If he runs again, it'll probably be for governor."

There was speculation Walz would move towards a position back in Washington after a failed bid as Vice President, under Kamala Harris. Harris-Walz lost to current President Donald Trump in last year's Election.

The Walz announcement paves the way for his Lt. Governor, Peggy Flanagan, to pursue the Senate seat. Flanagan was quick to announce she was running after Smith decided not to run.

There are still a number of other state Democrats who have expressed interest in at least exploring a run for senate, including current Rep. Angie Craig.

Governor Walz says he is "proud of the DFL’s deep bench of talent in Minnesota," and he is excited to see who the voters elect.

Of note, the governor does not plan to endorse any candidate in a primary race which Olson calls "curious."
