Former DFL state Senator and meteorologist Nicole Mitchell is trying to return to politics after burglary conviction.
Mitchell resigned from the legislature a year ago on the heels of her conviction for breaking into her stepmother's house in Detroit Lakes.
She was sentenced to six months in jail. Mitchell is appealing her burglary case.
Now, she's making a bid for Woodbury City Council. She filed for office this week. Mitchell's online campaign says she's focused on transparency and clean water issues in her hometown.
"It's official! I filed this afternoon as a candidate for the Woodbury City Council," Mitchell wrote on social media. "Much like I hope to bring winds of change to the City of Woodbury, on issues including transparency, environmental protection, and advocating for all members of our community.....the meteorologist in me chose to file on this beautiful day when a different wind of change finally broke the heat (and smoke), giving way to comfortable temperatures again!"
Woodbury Election Day is August 11, same as Primary day across the state.
Last September, Mitchell was sentenced to five years supervised probation and the judge stayed a 21 month prison.
The sentence came after Mitchell was convicted of burglarizing her stepmother’s home in 2024. The trial in Becker County ended last July. The two guilty charges included felony first-degree burglary and possession of burglary or theft tools.
Mitchell also served 180 days of work release in Ramsey County. "Your Honor, I deserve to be here today," Mitchell said during sentencing, that she is now appealing. "The things said and the harm I cause are real things and I completely abide by whatever you feel is fair."
