A 20-year-old Minneapolis man is facing charges after ramming his car into another vehicle, killing the driver.

The crash came after the suspect sped away from Robbinsdale police, who had briefly tried to pull him over for speeding.

John Elder of Robbinsdale police says the suspect was driving his car at nearly twice the speed limit on 42nd avenue north when he was first spotted by officers.

According to the report, police stopped their pursuit after about a block.

"They did have a valid probable cause to stop the vehicle and the officer was merely doing his job and doing it well," said Elder. "I also support this officer's decision to terminate that."

When the crash happened, officials say the suspect car was between 70 and 90 miles per hour.

The 34-year-old woman who died has been identified as Emily Gerding of Crystal. Her husband, 34-year old John Gerding is in the hospital with critical injuries.

Both worked as special education teachers at Coon Rapids Middle School. Family member say their two young daughters were not in the car.

The suspect, who authorities say was likely under the influence of drugs, is still in the hospital.
