With more snow in the first couple of months of winter than we got all season last year, local ski hill operators are pinching themselves. They’ve also benefitted from near perfect temperatures this winter.
“When I reflect back on what the weather was like in November, if you remember, it was 70 degrees mid-November and we had a target opening date of November 19th, and the weather was so warm that we didn't even know like if we would hit that budgeted opening date,” says Pam Hoye from Afton Alps near Hastings, MN.
She says since then, the weather has been “wonderful” and is inspiring people to get outside and enjoy some winter fun.
“It sets the environment for us to be true Minnesotans,” says Hoye.
Hoye says a new $20 minimum wage for all employees has allowed them to operate at a higher level this season. They’ve also been able to bring back their popular promotions and events post-pandemic, which she says has translated into a big boost in fun for skiers.
“We’ve had just a really good, consistent flow of people coming through the resort,” says Hoye.
