Bracing for the buzz: our mosquito comeback

Last week's rain prompting hatch in the coming days

You guessed it...all of our recent rain, while needed, is also bringing something else back into our lives - mosquitos.

Metropolitan Mosquito Control District spokesman Alex Carlson says the eggs were actually laid long ago, and have been lying in wait throughout the drought. Now they're ready to hatch.

"We were out all weekend checking ponds and wetlands to find where the larvae was present and our helicopters have been up since Sunday treating areas where we found enough larvae to merit treatment," says Carlson.

As for the relatively late hatch this summer?

"We're not going to see as many mosquitos as we would have had this rain came in, say, the end of June or early July. But it's still warm enough, water temperatures are high enough, and there's still enough mosquitos out that we're going to see a big increase over the next couple of days as they start to emerge from the water," says Carlson.

Carlson says homeowners should make sure they dump any standing water and refresh their birdbaths. He says those are the types of breeding grounds mosquitos--especially those that carry the West Nile Virus--love.
