The Minnesota Department of Public Safety is making a push to make it easier to renew your driver’s license.
As part of the department’s budget request, Minnesotans would only be required to renew their driver’s license in person every other renewal cycle, allowing for the option to renew online years going in-person isn’t required.
That means Minnesotans would only make a trip to the DMV every eight years to renew their license in person, according to Driver and Vehicle Services director Pong Xiong.
“Our intention here is to create an opportunity for Minnesotans to interact with DVS in a way that best meets their needs,” Xiong said before the committee. “By offering an online renewal process, we think we will be able to better serve Minnesotans the way they want to be served.
On top of helping to expand access for Minnesotans, Xiong told a Senate committee this afternoon it would also save the department $1.8 million annually.
The change is expected to be included in a larger transportation bill later this session.
