A St. Paul police officer who was wounded in a shootout Thursday is out of the hospital, while the suspect in the incident died early Friday morning.
The Ramsey County Medical Examiner identified the suspect as Brandon Daleshaun Keys, 24, of Maplewood.
Keys died of a gunshot wound to the head, according to the medical examiner.
"One of our officers was involved in a shooting just after 2 pm this afternoon near the intersection of Cretin Avenue N and Marshall Avenue," said a post from the department on X (formerly Twitter) on Thursday. "The officer and suspect were both injured in this shooting. There is no threat to the public from this incident."
According to St. Paul police, a woman called and told them she had protection order against a man who had been following her while she drove through the area.
The man reportedly fired first in the confrontation, the bullet striking one officer in the leg.
The officer who was hurt and also fired at the suspect is 14-year St. Paul police veteran Michael Tschida.
He received hospital treatment for a leg wound and is on standard administrative leave.
The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is conducting an investigation into an incident, which follows state guidelines for officer-involved shootings.
