It may be more than a month before the non-profit Sanneh Foundation can use the Conway Recreation Center after the building was damaged by fire on Sunday. Founder Tony Sanneh says they'll still move forward for the nearly 60 children who take part in their programs.
“We’re going to have to be really creative on where we take the kids,” Sanneh told WCCO’s Al Schoch. “Through a series of outdoor classrooms, and working with the library and other school partners to use their space.”
One of the planned food giveaways is taking place this week outside at Conway Park. Sanneh says the biggest problem after the fire is smoke damage through much of the recreation center. Officials have yet to determine the cause of the fire.
“We can’t use any of it now because of the smoke damage and the danger of the carcinogens,” said Sanneh. “I think after 3 to 4 weeks, we’ll be able to block off part of the building once the other piece is cleaned and disinfected. Then be able to start the reconstruction process on the part that burnt down.”
Sanneh says they are working with the city of Saint Paul on finding temporary headquarters for the foundation's operations. They are also talking with area public and charter schools who may have space available.
There is a fire fund that the foundation has begun. You can donate here.
According to their website, the Sanneh Foundation serves the holistic youth development needs of the increasingly diverse Twin Cities metro area.
Tony Sanneh is a former Retired U.S. Men's National Soccer player now working in community engagement and youth development.
