Authorities have identified the man who shot and killed Minneapolis police officer Jamal Mitchell in what investigators say was an ambush.

A release from the Hennepin County Medical Examiner's office says 35-year-old Mustafa Ahmed Mohamed was also killed during the gun battle.

Mitchell was reportedly answering a shots fired call in south Minneapolis and was attempting to help two injured people.

BCA investigators believe one of those people was Mohamed, who shot Mitchell, who they say kept firing after the officer fell to the ground.

Mohamed was then shot and killed during the gunfight with police.

Donations can be made to a memorial fund set up in officer Mitchell's name.

Court records show Mohamed had two active warrants for his arrest when the shooting happened last Thursday.

Those records also indicate Mohamed lived in St. Cloud as of 2023.

A third person died in the shooting and four others were hurt.
