After a brief break on Wednesday widely talked about snowfall made its way into the Twin Cities on Thursday as part of a massive winter storm that's walloped much of the state.

A winter storm warning blankets much of the Twin Cities until 6 p.m. Thursday according to the National Weather Service.

"I'm thinking 4 to 7 inches of snow by it begins to taper off on Friday," WCCO Radio meteorologist Paul Douglas said. "I think the heaviest snow will fall throughout Thursday with light flurries on Friday."

Less snow is expected south of the Twin Cities, but slick roadways are still a concern.

According to MnDOT spokesperson Anne Meyer, 200 snowplows were out at 12 a.m. Thursday trying to get ahead of the snowfall.

"800 plows statewide," Meyer said on the WCCO Radio Morning News. "This is a state event. We've seen heavy, heavy snow in the Duluth area, up along the North Shore, Rochester will see snow, Mankato, St. Cloud, and likely Moorhead."

Cold temperatures are expected to usher Minnesotans into the Christmas holiday.

"Nighttime lows below zero for seven straight days with daytime highs in maybe single digits," Douglas added. "It will get your attention right around Christmas."

Another winter weather event could be on the horizon for Minnesota next Wednesday and Thursday.
