Even though they are in terrible condition following a long winter, fixing St. Paul’s pothole problem has been slow-going, and city officials recently shared that the repairs could continue to drag on.

Public Works Director Sean Kershaw spoke with 5 Eyewitness News’ Tom Hauser News Talk 830 WCCO’s Morning News.

“I really appreciate everyone’s patience because, you know, I live in the city. It’s frustrating,” Kershaw said. “What we’re doing right now is focusing on the potholes that are the worst. That cause safety concerns. Most of those are done.”

Now, he says they’re moving on to arterial streets, admitting it’s been a terrible, frustrating time for St. Paul drivers.

When it comes to the city’s current efforts, Kershaw says the city employees from other departments, like sewers and forestry, who had been helping on potholes, have been pulled into flood duty.

“The teams that we have working on the streets are doing the best they can, given the competing demands that we have,” Kershaw said. “The bottom line is, we’re slowly getting caught up, and we know it’s really frustrating.”

Even though the process is taking its time, Kershaw says they’re slowly getting caught up and continuing to make repairs.
