St. Paul city leaders are making another run at funding to upgrade downtown's convention and arena complex

The city’s premier entertainment district is set for a major face-lift after Mayor Kaohly Her and the Minnesota Wild finalized a plan to overhaul the Grand Casino Arena, RiverCentre, and Roy Wilkins Auditorium.

The Mayor says by utilizing a mix of team contributions and existing tax extensions, the partnership aims to modernize aging infrastructure without triggering a property tax hike for residents.

“ From an investment perspective,” says Her, “ upgrading the city-owned property sends a clear signal that Saint Paul is open for business and ready for partnerships.”

This partnership focuses on essential repairs to 94-year-old infrastructure and improved fan amenities.

The owner of the WILD, Craig Leopold called the complex the "economic engine of our city," saying it brings in 383 million dollars in economic activity each year.

“ It’s an exciting time in Saint Paul right now,” says Leopld, “March is the busiest month for our capital city. These beloved city owned facilities are hosting state high school sports, Minnesota Wild, Minnesota Frost, and soon Major League Women's volleyball games, concerts, cultural events, and more, keeping our communities vibrant.”

He went on to say there is a need to keep these venues modern, safe, accessible, and up to date for visitors from across the state and beyond.

Local leaders are now shifting their focus toward the state legislature to secure the final round of funding needed to bring the project to life. They are asking for 200 million dollars from the state which could be a challenge.
