A man is in custody after shooting two people in western central Minnesota, one of whom died. The suspect in that case has now been identified as Ameer Matariyeh, 25, of Minneapolis.
The incident actually began in Minneapolis around 12:30 Tuesday afternoon on Lyndale Avenue in the Lyn-Lake area where a suspect allegedly began shooting at his ex-girlfriend and her current boyfriend from the upper floors of an apartment building.
The Midwest Medical Examiner’s Office has identified the person who was killed near Willmar, as Jerome Skluzacek, 55, of New London, MN. One other person was shot while the Matariyeh was on the run.
“The victim from the shooting near Lake Lillian is in stable condition and is expected to survive," Kandiyohi County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson, Imran Ali stated. "He has been identified as Peter Mayerchak, 25, of Lake Lillian, MN."
They say the investigation is still ongoing and no further information will be released.
"They said that there was a safety concern at Lime Apartments, come to find out that it's a guy that lives on the sixth floor and somebody has a video of him pointing a gun and shooting at cars," says resident Zach Boyle. "I tried to get in my apartment driving up the block and they were not letting anybody into like the whole block or two area."
Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O'Hara says the two were targeted as they were leaving. Neither were injured.
O'Hara says negotiators got a hold of the suspect while he was heading out of town and attempted to talk him into peacefully surrendering.
He ended up in Wilmar, where investigators with the Kandyohi County Sheriff's Department says he shot and killed a carjacking victim, and then went to a nearby home and shot and injured the homeowner before being taken into custody.
The investigation into the entire matter continues.
