Officials are investigating a suspected homicide at the state's correctional facility in Lino Lakes Thursday.
A spokesman says a 63-year-old male inmate was found unresponsive in his cell late Thursday morning and was pronounced dead a short time later. A 42-year old man serving a life sentence in the facility is the lone suspect and is in segregation.
Department of Corrections spokesperson Andy Skoogman said the 63-year-old man was serving a 19.5 year sentence at MCF-Lino Lakes. DOC medical staff and outside emergency medical personnel attempted lifesaving efforts. The man was pronounced dead shortly after 11:30 am.
The Midwest Medical Examiner’s office will conduct an autopsy to determine manner and cause of death. The identity of the victim will be released after full notification of next of kin.
MCF-Lino Lakes has been placed on modified lockdown status to allow for the investigation to be completed. Modified lockdown means the incarcerated population is restricted to their living units.
No further information, including the name of the suspect, is available currently.
