Recent data has shown that violence is on the rise at hospitals & healthcare facilities nationwide, including here in Minnesota, despite recent legislation’s efforts to reduce violence.
In about 40 states, laws have been passed to increase penalties for violence against healthcare workers, but it has not stopped the violence.
Minnesota Nurses Association President Mary Turner says there are endless factors that play into the everyday dangers healthcare workers face.
“I think some of the things that have contributed to it is that there are no visiting hours. There are no restrictions for visiting,” Turner said. “That’s a good thing for patients, but it can also cause us to run into a lot more unpleasant situations.”
The Nurse and Patient Safety Act was passed earlier this year to prevent violence at Minnesota hospitals after staff assaults tripled from 2019 to 2020.
