With long lines at community testing sites and no sign of an Omicron variant slow-down, the state is opening up more COVID testing options for people worried they have been infected by the virus. Governor Tim Walz announced that three new community testing sites will open, along with expanded testing at schools and more accessibility to at-home tests.
“Testing is a key tool for Minnesotans looking to protect themselves and their loved ones from COVID-19 – especially the new, contagious Omicron variant. That’s why we’re expanding the testing options available across Minnesota by opening new community testing sites and providing more at-home rapid tests to communities and schools. I have directed the National Guard to operate more testing sites to make sure every Minnesotan has access to the convenient testing they deserve, and we’re partnering with schools and community groups to make sure rapid tests are available to students, teachers, and families everywhere.”
Governor Walz says the three new free community testing sites are opening in Anoka, Cottage Grove and North Branch. The state is providing schools with another 1.8 million at-home rapid tests, on top of the original million tests already distributed. And, 150-thousand at-home rapid test kits will be distributed to the public through partnerships with local public and tribal health providers, food banks, and health department community coordinators.
Anyone can get a COVID test for free at one of several community testing sites found on the health department's website, or by ordering a test through the state's free at-home testing program. Minnesota Department of Health Commissioner Jan Malcolm says testing is one of the most important ways to lower the risk of infection.
“Testing is a vital tool for helping lower the risk of COVID-19 for Minnesotans, their families and their communities, so it’s very important to make it as easy as possible for everyone to access. Test results only represent one moment in time, so it’s important for people to use the other layers of prevention, including vaccination and boosters, masking, and staying home when sick in order to prevent spread.”
