Washington County Attorney Pete Orput has died at his home in Stillwater after what his family calls a "long illness."
He was 66.
Orput served as Washington County's top prosecutor since 2011 and was set to retire later this year.
Orput previously worked as an assistant attorney in Hennepin County, as well as stints with the state Attorney Generals' office and the Department of corrections.
He most recently was involved in the charging decision for former Brooklyn Center officer Kim Potter, but ended up leaving the case because activists were staging protests outside of his Stillwater home.
