CLARKSTON, Mich. (WWJ) – Legendary rocker Carlos Santana collapsed on stage during his performance at Pine Knob Music Theater in Clarkston Tuesday night.
Officials say medical personnel rushed to the stage around 10 p.m. after the 74-year-old musician collapsed.
It was not clear what caused Santana to collapse, though medical staff at Pine Knob tended to many concertgoers due to Tuesday's heat, according to Detroit music journalist Gary Graff, who spoke live on WWJ Tuesday night.
His condition was not immediately clear, though Graff tells WWJ he waved to the crowd as he was taken away on a stretcher.
Graff says he and his band were “on fire” for the first hour or so they were on stage and he collapsed while introducing a song called "Joy" from his new album.
Santana walked over to one of the risers on stage, sat down and passed out. Crews were quick to put up a cover in front of Santana, who remained on stage for about 20 minutes until he was taken away.
WWJ's Sandra McNeill, who was at the concert, reports Santana had just talked about the new song, which is "about love and healing," when he sat down and ultimately slumped over.
Fans were told the show would not go on, though a crew member said they would return to Detroit. They also asked the crowd for prayers, as it was a "serious medical issue."
Earth, Wind & Fire opened the show at Pine Knob and McNeill reported they weren't sweating as much as Santana's band, whose show included fire and lots of light.
