Another round of No Kings protests being held in communities across the U.S. today come on the heels of a “nosedive” in approval ratings for President Donald Trump. People will gather at more than 3,300 different events to protest his administration.
“Masked secret police terrorizing our communities,” said the No Kings website. “An illegal, catastrophic war putting us in danger and driving up our costs. Attacks on our freedom of speech, our civil rights, our freedom to vote. Costs pushing families to the brink. Trump wants to rule over us as a tyrant. But this is America, and power belongs to the people - not to wannabe kings or their billionaire cronies.”
According to Nate Silver’s Silver Bulletin report on Trump’s approval ratings, the president’s “popularity has taken something of a nosedive,” in the wake of his announcement that the U.S. bombed Iran. That conflict in the Middle East has continued, contributing to skyrocketing gas prices here in the U.S.
The Economist showed that Trump’s approval rating was falling this week as well. Nearly two-thirds, of participants in a recent Fox News poll said they were dissatisfied with how things are going in the U.S.
No Kings protests were also held last October, when nearly half of Americans said they supported the protests compared to 33% who disapproved, according to YouGov polling. At that time, support was up compared to No Kings protests held in June.
This year has also been marked with controversy over Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) crackdowns, specifically the deadly Operation Metro Surge crackdown in Minnesota. That’s where Saturday’s flagship No Kings rally was stationed Saturday.
According to the No Kings website, the event was slated to start at 3 p.m. ET. Attendees slated to appear included Maggie Rogers, Jane Fonda, Gov. Tim Walz, Lt. Gov. Peggy Flanagan, Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), Bruce Springsteen, Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.), Tom Morello of Rage Against the Machine, Attorney General Keith Ellison and Joan Baez.
Actor Robert De Niro provided a video address and called the president a “would be king.”
“As the Trump administration continues to rule through repression and fear, millions across the nation plan to join the No Kings National Day of Nonviolent Action – in red states, blue states and everywhere in between, with more than 3,300 local events planned nationwide,” said the No Kings site. “No Kings is not just a big-city phenomenon; two-thirds of registrants come from outside major urban centers. From illegal wars to masked agents in our streets to driving up costs and trying to control our elections before they happen, this administration’s actions are not just angering deep blue urban centers, but they are crossing a red line for everyday families in the suburbs, too.”
One poster on Bluesky shared by 50501: The People’s Movement said that there were already more than 40,000 people at the St. Paul rally at the State Capitol as of 1:30 p.m.
“The crowd is growing here in St. Paul Minnesota at the State Capitol,” said the poster, Aaron Black. “There are about 40k people here right now with multiple marches still coming. The temperature has warmed up to a balmy 39 degrees, the sun is out and everybody is having a great time.”
