What happens to over 3,000 people on a cruise ship when a coronavirus outbreak ensues? This documentary wants to show you.
HBO's "The Last Cruise" documents the lives of those traveling from Japan in January aboard the Diamond Princess cruise ship just as the coronavirus pandemic began to sweep the nation.
Of 3,711 passengers, two tested positive initially, leading to an outbreak of 712 infections with 14 losing their lives. In total, passengers were forced to quarantine on the ship for a month and a half.
"I spent months collecting hundreds of hours of cell phone footage taken by the passengers and crew aboard the Diamond Princess," director Hannah Olson told People.
"I wanted this to be an immersive experience, meant to transport the viewer back into the particular feeling of the early days of this pandemic," she continued.
Finally, on after departing on January 20, 2020, passengers were allowed to disembark the ship on March 1.

The recently debuted trailer shows passengers of the ship as they begin to notice people in hazmat suits board the ship. The captain then makes an announcement, saying that everyone aboard the ship will have to quarantine for "at least 14 days."
"Even though the passengers were quarantined, the crew had to keep the ship going," a narrator can be heard saying.
Many aboard the Diamond Princess were left wondering when they were ever going to be able to make it off the ship.
"The Last Cruise" will premiere on HBO and HBO Max on March 30.
