Buffalo, N.Y. (WGR 550) - The Buffalo Bills have officially placed running back Nyheim Hines on the Reserve/Non-Football Injured list after he suffered a significant knee injury in a jet ski accident.
Because it is Reserved/NFI and not Active/NFI, Hines’ spot will not count against the 90-man training camp roster limit. However, it does means he's out for the entire season.
The team also placed pass rusher Von Miller, defensive tackle Jordan Phillips and linebacker Tyler Matakevich on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list on Tuesday.
Miller is still recovering from a torn ACL he suffered on Thanksgiving this past season in a game against the Detroit Lions at Ford Field.
LISTEN LIVE TO WGR:
Phillips had offseason shoulder surgery, but was present for all of the team's organized team activities (OTAs) and minicamp practices that were open to the media. He was only able to work off to the side with trainers during those sessions.
At this time, it's unclear what Matakevich is dealing with.
All three players still count against the team’s 90-man roster limit while at training camp. Any of the three can all be activated at any time, but cannot practice at all until then.
At the end of camp when teams cut their rosters to the maximum 53-man limit for the regular season, if any of them are still on the PUP list, they must miss a minimum of four regular season games.
The Bills also announced the signing of two players on Tuesday, tight end Jace Sternberger and running back Darrynton Evans. Both were inked to one-year deals.
Sternberger was a 2019 third-round pick of the Green Bay Packers out of Texas A&M. He played two full seasons in Green Bay before being waived in early 2021. Since then, he's spent time on the Seattle Seahawks' and Pittsburgh Steelers' practice squad, as well as the Washington Commanders' active roster for less than a month.
For his NFL career, Sternberger has played a total of 18 games, all with the Packers, catching 12 passes for 114 yards and a touchdown.
He most recently played for the Birmingham Stallions of the USFL, leading the league in touchdown receptions with seven.
As for Evans, he entered the NFL as a third-round pick of the Tennessee Titans in 2020 out of Appalachian State. He spent last season with the Chicago Bears, playing six games and rushing for 64 yards on 14 attempts.
For his NFL career, Evans has carried the ball 30 times for 125 yards and caught five passes for 71 yards and a touchdown.
All of the moves on Tuesday still keep the Bills at the maximum of 90 players heading into training camp, which starts Wednesday morning at St. John Fisher University.
