Bills re-sign running back Ty Johnson, fullback Reggie Gilliam

Buffalo is also reportedly bringing back running back Darrynton Evans

Orchard Park, N.Y. (WGR Sports Radio 550) - The Buffalo Bills were very busy Tuesday when it came to their offensive backfield.

The team announced it has re-signed running back Ty Johnson to a two-year contract, as well as fullback Reggie Gilliam to a one-year contract.

Johnson proved to be one of the most valuable third down backs in the entire league last season. Offensive coordinator Joe Brady really leaned on him in important situations.

The 27-year-old is a former sixth-round pick of the Detroit Lions, finishing the 2024 season with 213 yards rushing, but a 5.2 yards per-carry average, while adding another 284 receiving yards. This included a whopping five catches for 114 yards in a big Week 15 win over the Lions.

Gilliam, also 27, has been a very valuable special teams player over his five seasons with the club, including leading the entire team by playing 74% of special teams snaps this past year.

The 2020 undrafted free agent out of Toledo was also fairly involved as a blocker in Brady’s offense, on the field for over 15% of the offensive snaps in eight of the team’s last nine games, including the playoffs.

Additionally, the agency for Darrynton Evans tweeted that the team and the running back have agreed to terms on a new deal.

Evans returns to the Bills after spending each of the previous two training camps on their roster.

He had a terrific preseason a couple years ago before being released, and then playing for the Chicago Bears and Miami Dolphins.

The 26-year-old was on the Bills’ preseason roster again last year before ultimately going on Injured Reserve. He was eventually released and returned to the Bears.

With the three additions, the Bills now have the exact same five running backs (six, including Gilliam at fullback) on the roster as they went into training camp with last year.
