Orchard Park, NY (WGR) - Buffalo Bills head coach Joe Brady was happy that his team found a way to win even when they weren't playing their best football on Sunday, ultimately beating the Los Angeles Chargers 24-16.
The Bills dug themselves into a 10-0 hole early in the game after turning the ball over a couple of times, including on the very first play when James Cook fumbled, and then the following series when Josh Allen threw an interception.
Then the offense turned the ball over three more times throughout the course of the game.
“Nothing that showed up yesterday were things that are out of our control,” Brady said of the five turnovers. “We did everything we could to try to lose that football game yesterday in losing the football.”
But thanks to a defense that buckled down, made key plays when needed, and held the chargers out of the end zone after a touchdown on their initial drive, the Bills were able to exit Highmark Stadium 3-0.
"Offensively, we didn’t have our fastball yesterday," Brady said. "But defensively, we had our fastball. As we continue to learn how we're gonna find different ways to win, to be able to win yesterday when our offense wasn't at their best, but our defense was keeping us in that football game and playing really outstanding football, is gonna pay dividends as we go.”
Brady didn't offer much of an update on any injured players, including cornerback Christian Benford, who left the game and was eventually ruled out with a toe injury. Benford was in a walking boot in the locker room following the contest.
Quarterback Josh Allen took a hit to his left knee in the fourth quarter and appeared to be limping after the game.
Brady said Allen is always banged up the day after games but added, “I’m never usually concerned about him," and that they’ll see how any players who are dealing with injuries progress throughout the week.
Mathis suspension lifted
On Monday, Bills defensive tackle Phidarian Mathis' three-game suspension was officially lifted. Mathis served three games for violating the NFL's substance abuse policy due to an alcohol-related incident while with the New York Jets in the spring of 2025.
The Bills get a three day exemption for Mathis' addition to the active roster. They'll have to make a roster move by Thursday.
