Buffalo, N.Y. (WGR Sports Radio 550) - Once again this offseason, I'll be examining the state of each Buffalo Bills position as the team heads toward free agency and the 2025 NFL Draft in Green Bay.
As usual, we'll start things off with a look at the quarterbacks:

Under contract:
- Josh Allen
- Mitch Trubisky
- Mike White
- Shane Buechele
Pending free agents:
- None

State of the position:
There's really only one question this offseason, and then another this training camp when it comes to the Bills' quarterback position.
The offseason question is if and when Josh Allen will get a new contract.
Allen, who turns 29 in May, is under contract for four more seasons, and scheduled to count for over $43 million against the team’s salary cap in 2025.
That’s actually undervalued for Allen, who is a finalist for league MVP for the fourth time in his career. He has just the 10th-highest cap hit amongst all NFL quarterbacks next season, but it’s still a number the Bills may want to lower in order to give themselves more spending flexibility this offseason.
To do that, they’ll either need to restructure his deal once again (as they have the last few years) or sign an extension. That may be exactly what happens in order to get his salary more in-line with the best players in the league, and also allow more years to push some of that money down the road, lowering his cap hit.
The question that will be sorted out during training camp is what’s the pecking order after Allen?
Mitch Trubisky is the incumbent backup with one year left on his deal. The 30-year-old former No. 2 overall pick of the Chicago Bears in the 2017 NFL Draft saw time in nine games last season, including coming in for Allen after just one play and playing the majority of the rest of their Week 18 contest against the New England Patriots.
Mike White was signed to a contract prior to that season finale, played in the game, and is under contract for next season. White, who turns 30 in March, came to the Bills last offseason and spent the year on the practice squad.
White essentially replaced Shane Beuchele, who was hurt in the preseason, then spent the year on Injured Reserve.
Buechele has never taken a snap in an NFL regular season game. He spent his first two seasons with the Kansas City Chiefs, but was released at the end of training camp in 2023 and signed with the Bills' practice squad, spending all season there before returning last year.
The Bills really like the attributes of Buechele, who just turned 27-years-old. He re-signed with the team on a one-year deal at the end of this season, and should get a legitimate shot to win the backup job next year, competing with Trubisky and White.
