McDermott: 'We've got to clean some things up' following victory over Patriots

Bills head coach Sean McDermott addressed the media following Buffalo's 24-21 victory over New England

Orchard Park, N.Y. (WGR Sports Radio 550) - Despite a bit of a sluggish start from the Buffalo Bills on Sunday in Orchard Park, the team was able to come away with a victory in a close contest against the New England Patriots, 24-21, at Highmark Stadium.

The Bills trailed throughout the first half, but managed to find a way to take a lead in the second half they would not relinquish.

"Good to get a win. It's hard to win. Don't take those for granted," said Bills head coach Sean McDermott following Sunday's win. "We thought we played sloppy in the first half, in particular, and overall, we've got to clean some things up. The second half was a lot better, controlling the line of scrimmage offensively, and defensively with the takeaways. But you can't start a game the way we did with the kickoff return, and just getting off to an overall bad start. So I applaud the guys for finding a way, and the coaching staff as well. [We made] some good adjustments at halftime, but again, we're planning on coming out of this game, we'll look at the tape and make sure we continue to adjust."

Where the tide changed for Buffalo was a trio of forced turnovers in the second half, which included a first-career interception for defensive back Cam Lewis, filling in for the injured Damar Hamlin and Taylor Rapp after safety.

McDermott commended the sixth-year defensive back for being able to play the safety position, even though it's not his natural position.

"He hadn't played a lot of safety for us, even in practice," McDermott said. "With the injuries, all of a sudden, he's starting at safety, as opposed to just Cam being ready to go as the backup safety and also the backup nickel, starting dime, and then a core special teams player. He gets pushed into the starting role with safety the last two weeks, and I think he's done a real nice job."
