Los Angeles, Calif. (WGR Sports Radio 550) - The 2025 NHL Draft has come and gone, as 32 of the top hockey prospects were able to hear their names called in the first round at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles.
The draft got started with the selection of defenseman Matthew Schaefer to the New York Islanders. Schaefer was widely regarded as the best prospect available in the entire class of prospects, and is the first defenseman taken with the No. 1 pick since Owen Power went to the Buffalo Sabres in the 2021 NHL Draft.
Following Schaefer was a run of center being taken with six of the next seven picks. Michael Misa, arguably the best forward prospect in the 2025 draft class, went second overall to the San Jose Sharks, followed by Anton Frondell to the Chicago Blackhawks, Caleb Desnoyers to the Utah Mammoth, Brady Martin to the Nashville Predators, James Hagens to the Boston Bruins and Jake O'Brien to the Seattle Kraken.
The only non-center selected in that stretch of forwards taken was Porter Martone, who went sixth overall to the Philadelphia Flyers.
Then the Sabres ended up going to the blue line with the ninth overall pick, selecting the towering right-shot defenseman Radim Mrtka out of the Western Hockey League's Seattle Thunderbirds.
Then the Anaheim Ducks closed out the top-10 picks with the selection of another center, this time seeing Roger McQueen going off the board to Southern California.
Overall, this draft was quite active, in terms of picks being moved around. A total of four trades were made in the first round between teams moving up-and-down the draft board. Earlier in the day, the big trade came courtesy of the Montreal Canadiens acquiring defenseman Noah Dobson from the Islanders in exchange for the 16th and 17th overall picks this year, as well as forward Emil Heineman.
