The Google Calendar app has stopped celebrating Pride Month, Black History Month, Women's History Month, Hispanic Heritage Month, and Indigenous Peoples Month.
Google explained that maintaining these observances globally became "unsustainable" due to the wide range of events and countries involved. In a statement, Google said the company will now only feature public holidays and national observances from TimeandDate.com
Some commenters on Google's support forums criticized the move, saying it's an attempt to erase marginalized communities. The controversy follows recent actions by former President Trump and his allies against DEI initiatives.
The move by Google is part of a larger trend where corporations are scaling back their DEI commitments, even though research suggests consumers increasingly support companies that prioritize inclusivity.
For now, Google users are urged to add their own observances to personal calendars.
