As summer heats up, so do STI rates — but there's some good news. A new report analyzing CDC data shows sexually transmitted infections like chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis, and HIV continue to rise nationally, hitting 2.5 million reported cases in 2023. But researchers say the STI epidemic is finally starting to slow, thanks in part to increased access to PrEP and better sex education.
The South still reports the highest infection rates, driven by barriers to care and prevention. Meanwhile, New England states have the lowest rates, thanks to better access to healthcare and testing.
