The Red Sox on Tuesday activated catcher/utilityman Blake Swihart from the 10-day disabled list and designated catcher Dan Butler for assignment.
Swihart has been sidelined since Aug. 2 with a right hamstring strain. The 26-year-old was in the midst of an outstanding stretch before getting injured, hitting .366 with a .959 OPS over 16 games from June 26 until being injured. Included in that run was a career-best 11-game hitting streak and walkoff double against the Phillies.
Swihart started at catcher and went 0-for-3 in his lone rehab start at short-season Lowell on Sunday.
Butler, 31, started two games over the weekend in Baltimore, his first big-league appearances since 2014. This is his ninth year in the Red Sox organization.
