Earlier this week Colts linebacker Bobby Okereke let the world know that Indianapolis had a pretty simple game plan on defense heading into Saturday night’s big AFC matchup against the Patriots: stop the run, make New England “one-dimensional,” and see what rookie QB Mac Jones “can do.”
While stopping the run and making a team one-dimensional has been the backbone of many a defensive game plan in the NFL for a long time, the comments created a little bit of a stir in the modern social media world.
They’ve made their way to the ears of a number of Patriots players this week if not to the team’s bulletin board.
Bill Belichick was asked during his Thursday morning Zoom call with local reporters about Okereke’s comments and how he reads into another team saying something that theoretically reveals their approach prior to a game.
“Well, we’ll get ready and prepare for the game and play the game and see what happens,” Belichick said.
Belichick’s tame response came a day after Jones himself sidestepped and downplayed the Colts’ comments. The rookie simply acknowledged that Indy has a “great defense” and declared that the “see what he can do” barb did nothing motivate him.
“No," Jones said. "I mean, everyone has their opinions and my job is to be the best quarterback I can be. My job is to be the best quarterback I can be and I can do a better job of that every day at practice.
That’s what I can control and like I said, they have a great defense and there’s great players all around. Everyone is entitled to their opinion.”
Saturday night at Luca Oil Stadium we’ll all find out exactly how the Colts deal with the impressive rookie QB Jones, as well has how New England attacks the Indy defense.
As Colts GM Chris Ballard once infamously said, maybe indeed the “rivalry is back on.”
