There was a time when Boomer Esiason was as high on Mac Jones as pretty much anyone. After a strong start to Jones’ rookie season in 2021, Esiason said on The Greg Hill Show that he thought Jones would have been the first quarterback taken – even ahead of Trevor Lawrence – if the 2021 draft were done over.

Over the last two seasons, however, the CBS analyst and WFAN host has become more critical of Jones amid the quarterback’s struggles, especially of the way he carries himself. Last year, he said there was a “douchiness” to Jones. A couple weeks ago, he said Jones’ body language was “not the way a leader has to carry themselves.”

Now, after Jones and the Patriots dropped to 2-6 on Sunday, Esiason believes “the ship may have sailed” on Jones’ time in New England. During his weekly appearance on The Greg Hill Show on Monday (listen to the full interview above), Esiason said he thought Jones had a real chance to get back on track this season, but he just hasn’t seen it.

“Well, I would say it’s been really disappointing,” Esiason said of Jones’ season. “I thought that the combination of Bill O’Brien and him, because of their familiarity with each other and Bill being at Alabama and of course Mac being from there, I thought that maybe, just maybe, somehow they would unlock the best of Mac Jones.

“We have not seen that. I think I kind of tend to agree with Jermaine [Wiggins] here that the ship may have sailed. If it has, it’s been a wild ride, that’s for sure. It’s been woefully inconsistent. A lot of it is not his fault. Although I would say this year, I would have expected better.”
