Patriots continue to build defense, reportedly sign CB Carlton Davis

While New England Patriots fans were waiting for splashes on offense, Mike Vrabel, Eliot Wolf and company opened the legal tampering period of free agency by building out their defense.

After reportedly agreeing to deals with outside linebacker Harold Landry on Sunday and inside linebacker Robert Spillane earlier Monday, the Patriots have also reportedly now agreed to a deal with cornerback Carlton Davis.

NFL Media's Tom Pelissero, who was first to report the deal, says it is a three-year, $60 million deal for Davis, with $34.5 million fully guaranteed.

Davis, 28, played six seasons with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers from 2018-23 before spending last season with the Detroit Lions. In 2024, he had 56 tackles, two intercepts, 11 passes defended, and two tackles for loss in 13 games before suffering a season-ending broken jaw. He had a PFF grade of 74.5, which ranked 29th out of 223 cornerbacks.

In New England, Davis will presumably start opposite young stud Christian Gonzalez, giving the Patriots a formidable 1-2 punch at cornerback. The Patriots could lose Jonathan Jones, who is a free agent.
