Do we have a case of broadcaster-on-broadcaster crime?
During the pivotal eighth inning of the Red Sox's comeback win over the Yankees on Sunday, John Sterling appeared to take a swipe at his play-by-play peer, Joe Castiglione. When Kiki Hernandez doubled to left field (scoring Christian Vazquez), Sterling seemingly alluded to Castig’s trademark catch phrase.
Can you believe it?!
“If I hadn’t seen it so many times, I would’ve said, ‘Uhh, it’s unbelievable,’” Sterling remarked (audio courtesy of The Greg Hill Show).
Yankees broadcasters were feeling feisty last weekend. During YES’ broadcast of Thursday’s game, Michael Kay ripped Red Sox fans for being “reactive.”
The slight prompted a witty rebuttal from Alex Cora.
"It wasn't a movie theatre," Cora said. "It was Fenway Park and it was fun.”
Castiglione certainly had more fun than Sterling last weekend, as the Red Sox took three of four from the Bronx Bombers. And while Castig can be accused of repeating the same phrase whenever the Red Sox come up with late-game heroics, at least he’s actually describing the action on the field, and not a replay.
You can believe that.
