Red Sox sign Alex Bregman to 3-year, $120 million deal

On the day that pitchers and catchers officially reported to spring training, the Boston Red Sox finally landed the right-handed bat they had been linked to all offseason.

According to multiple reports, the Red Sox and Alex Bregman have agreed to a three-year deal worth $120 million. The deal was first reported by Chandler Rome of The Athletic.

The deal reportedly includes opt-outs after each season. ESPN's Jeff Passan adds that the contract also includes some deferred money.

UPDATE - On Saturday morning, the Red Sox officially announced the signing of Bregman in a press release.

Bregman, 30, has spent his entire nine-year major league career with the Houston Astros to this point, helping them win two World Series in 2017 (when Red Sox manager Alex Cora was Houston's bench coach) and 2022.

Bregman finished top-five in MVP voting in 2018 and 2019, his two best seasons. In 2024, Bregman hit .260 with 26 home runs, 75 RBIs, 79 runs scored and a .768 OPS, while also winning his first Gold Glove at third base.

Whether Bregman remains at third base with the Red Sox remains to be seen. That would necessitate Rafael Devers moving to either first base or designated hitter. Bregman could also potentially move to second base, with Devers staying at third. (UPDATE: Passan reports Bregman is expected to play second base in Boston.)
