We knew Corey Kluber was going to throw for scouts in Jan. Now we have an idea of exactly when the workout will take place.
According to ESPN's Buster Olney, the tentative plan is for Kluber to throw for scouts on Jan. 19 or 20.
The Red Sox are known to have interest in Kluber, a free agent who is coming off throwing just one inning in 2020 due to a shoulder issue.
Chaim Bloom was asked about how the Red Sox might approach such a free agent as the two-time Cy Young Award winner, with the pitcher's physical uncertainty looming.
"Can't imagine who you might be talking about," Bloom retorted. "I would say hypothetically, but I actually think it's really difficult to take hypothetically because so much depends on the specifics of the situation. Obviously with anybody who is working their way back from injury, the medical evaluation plays a huge role and how you forecast that going. And other factors, obviously the timing of the market, the desires of the player, what other decisions you might have to make at that time.
"It's hard to answer in the abstract, but I think it just falls under the heading of the way I've talked about a lot of the other decisions we have to make this offseason. We need to be active, we need to be fully informed, we need to make sure we have as much information as possible, and then just try to make the best decision from there, looking at every decision in the context of the larger market."
Kluber, who typically resides in the Boston area during the offseason, has been working out at Cressey SportsPerformance in Jupiter, Fla.
The only sure-fire addition the Red Sox have made to their big-league staff is the one-year contract given to Matt Andriese. Bloom has, however, been linked to a variety of other potential fits the rotation, including Japanese hurler Kohei Arihara, who ultimately signed with the Rangers.
