The New York Giants and GM Dave Gettleman have consistently said they believe in Daniel Jones as their starting quarterback, even more so as reports came out over the last few days around the NFL Draft that three-time NFL MVP Aaron Rodgers was unhappy in Green Bay.
After Round 1 of the Draft on Thursday, Gettleman said that news was “none of my business,” and in an appearance on Moose & Maggie on WFAN on Monday, the Big Blue GM doubled down on that Rodgers thought, as well as looking into a possibly disgruntled Russell Wilson…with a caveat.
“You explore everything, but at the end of the day, we believe in Daniel (Jones), and we keep moving,” Gettleman said. “I don’t want to talk hypotheticals.”
Jones regressed in many pundits’ minds last season, but Gettleman told Moose & Maggie that he thinks these days, draft picks make the biggest jump between Year 2 and Year 3, but fell short of calling it a make or break year.
“This will be a big jump for Daniel; it’s his second year in the same scheme, and I feel we’ve done a good job of getting Daniel some help,” Gettleman said. “Obviously, this is the year that Daniel should really make a major stride. Our game is just so different, everything happens a click or two faster. But with the work he has put in on and off the field, we’re looking forward to seeing him thrive.”
And the Giants believe that Jones has the work ethic to do so.
“With Daniel, you don’t have to beg him to study and watch film. It’s the voluntary period so he does what he does, but one of the things that was critical in making the decision to draft him was seeing if he is naturally driven, and there’s no doubt about that,” Gettleman said. “We were spoiled by Eli Manning’s dedication and how he carried himself as the face of the franchise. It was important to me that the next guy in could be that guy, and there’s no doubt in our minds Daniel is that.”
