Robert Saleh told reporters at Jets OTAs on Tuesday that there is really only “6-8 teams” in the NFL that come into the season with actual chances to win a title, and that his team is one of those this season.
Gio took issue with those comments for a couple reasons.
“You’re telling me there’s been years where he basically felt like his teams had no shot of winning a championship?” Gio said. “I know Zach Wilson wound up being terrible, but going into last year, this was a team that thought they were gonna take a huge step forward…the defense was going to be very good, it was year tow of Robert Saleh. We’ve seen teams with quarterbacks on rookie contracts going on these runs. You’re telling me last year he stood in front of that team and said ‘There is no realistic shot of us getting to the Super Bowl at all?’ You can’t say that.”
In addition to that, there have been several teams over the years that made a run to the Big Game despite coming into the year with low expectations from outsiders.
“Russell Wilson with the Seattle Seahawks was another one,” Gio said. “The Panthers won 15 games with Cam Newton, nobody expected them to go to the Super Bowl.”
Finally, can we avoid jinxes this early in the year please??
“Now, you’ve got the ‘touch the money’ issue that I bring up,” Gio said. “He says ‘We are one of those 6-8 teams.’
“I don’t know, if you’re the coach, that you can stand up there and say that.”
