Mets fans experienced a wide range of emotions on Tuesday, when news broke that weeks of negotiating wasn't enough to seal the deal with Carlos Correa, as the star shortstop signed with the Twins after medical concerns derailed his agreement with New York.
For a few anonymous Mets players that spoke with MLB insider Jon Heyman, the sentiment was mainly disappointment.
"It's a big letdown," one Met player told Heyman in his piece for the New York Post.
Correa would have given New York a massive upgrade defensively at the hot corner, while also providing a pivotal bat in the middle of the lineup, one that was clearly missing down the stretch of the regular season and during the Mets' Wild Card Series loss to the Padres. But the Mets, much like the Giants, had big concerns about Correa's long-term durability given his surgically repaired ankle, and he took more guaranteed money to return to Minnesota.
Backing out of a $315 million agreement because of a medical red flag seems like a sensible move, but in the here and now, some Mets players clearly couldn't shake off the disappointment on losing a critical addition before they every really had him.
"Everyone is disappointed," another Met told Heyman. "If the possibility wasn't there nobody would have complained. However, the possibility was there to get much better, and it didn't happen. The Braves and Phillies must be very happy today."
