Luis Severino is about to go out on the rehab trail.

Severino threw roughly 50 pitches in a simulated game at Tropicana Field on Thursday morning, prior to the Yankees’ series finale with the Rays, and Yankees manager Aaron Boone said his next step is a rehab start somewhere on Tuesday.

“Sevy was really good, another really good step for him. I think he ended up throwing 49 pitches,” Boone said. “I was standing right behind watching. The slider is really good, the cutter is becoming a really good pitch, when he wanted the life on the fastball, it was there, flashed a really good changeup.”

Severino was supposed to make a rehab start on Thursday, but with rain in the forecast in Tampa for the day, the team decided to turn the outing into a sim game. As it seems, he came through with flying colors, and will begin his rehab on August 3, likely for one of the Tampa affiliates.

“I'm excited about where he is - I know he is, too,” Boone said.

Severino has pitched just 20 1/3 innings in the first three seasons of his four-year, $40 million deal, all in 2019. He missed all of 2020 after undergoing Tommy John surgery, and then had a setback in his rehab this year, injuring his groin in a June rehab start.
