Last minute field goal launches Bills over Ravens in home opener

The Bills best the Ravens in a rematch of last season's divisional round

Orchard Park, NY (WGR Sports Radio 550) - The Buffalo Bills regular season campaign began in exciting fashion against the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday Night Football. Baltimore's revenge tour fizzled out as the Bills mounted a last minute stand that came down to a game winning field goal.

The Bills received the opening kickoff and made quick work of Baltimore's defense. After a pass that was nearly intercepted, the Bills were able to draw the Ravens defense off-sides. That set up a big rush from Ty Johnson to get the Bills within the red zone. On the next play, Josh Allen found Dalton Kincaid with an absolute rocket of a pass for a 15 yard touchdown to take an early lead.

Baltimore's offensive drive did not go as planned. The Bills defense was holding strong. Lamar Jackson was introduced to Ed Oliver face-to-face as Oliver brought him down 15-yards behind the line of scrimmage on third down, forcing a field goal from 52-yards out from Tyler Loop.

As the second quarter got underway, the Ravens took advantage of the Bills offense not scoring on their last drive. Derrick Henry took matters into his own hands and bulldozed his way through the Bills defense for a 30-yard rushing touchdown.

After multiple attempts at runs and screens, the Bills offense stalled out before anything could get going yet again. Baltimore continued to work on offense, Henry cracked another huge rush for 49-yards. Jackson took matters into his hands to cap off the drive with an 11-yard touchdown run, extending Baltimore's lead to 10.

Buffalo was able to get points on the board, albeit only three. Allen and the offense stalled out in the red zone. Matt Prater was called on and kicked a 25-yard field goal to lessen the deficit.

Henry continued to wreak havoc on the Bills defense until they decided to run the ball without him. Justice Hill was interrupted in the backfield as Joey Bosa slapped the ball out of his hands for a 15-yard loss. The defense was able to hold Baltimore to a field goal by Loop as time was coming to a close in the first half.

The Bills were able to steal three more points after the big stop, Kincaid got out of bounds after a deep pass from Allen leaving one second on the clock. Prater capitalized and successfully kicked a 43-yard field goal to bring it to a one score game at half time.

Baltimore picked up right where they left off. The Bills held them to third down but on a botched blitz, Jackson and Zay Flowers connected for a 39-yard pass. This set up Jackson and Flowers to connect again right after for a 23-yard touchdown.

The Bills answered right back with a touchdown to keep it close. Matt Prater successfully kicked an extra point but there was a penalty on Baltimore. Buffalo elected to go for two from the 1-yard line but after Keon Coleman completed the pass, it was determined that he was out of bounds before the pass was completed so it ended up being no good.

After a big stop by Buffalo's defense the Ravens were forced to punt. Allen and the offense yet again, failed to capitalize on the opportunity to really tighten up the score board.

Failing to capitalize led to a big score from the Ravens. Jackson looked deep to DeAndre Hopkins and connected on a 29-yard one handed catch for a touchdown.

The Bills offense chipped back with a score, but Baltimore laid it back on. Jackson turned a major sack into a first down gain, and Henry barreled 46 yards into the end zone for the first time in the second half.

The Bills came alive in the last five minutes of the game with the first touchdown coming on a 10 yard pass to Keon Coleman after slicing their way down the field.

After the touchdown, Oliver made another splash play. He forced Henry to fumble and Terrell Bernard recovered it on Baltimore's 30 yard line. Allen found rookie tight end Jackson Hawes for a 29-yard gain. Allen kept it himself from there and rushed for a 1-yard touchdown, bringing the score to within two.

The Bills defense needed a stop. After three run stops and it being fourth down with two yards remaining, the Bills got their stop as Baltimore punted rather than going for the first down to ice the game.

Allen worked the offense into field goal range. It all came down to Prater, the emergency signing to fill in for Tyler Bass while injured, for a 32-yard field goal to win the game as the clock ran down. He nailed the kick and completed the comeback as the Bills emerge victorious by a score of 41-40.
