Sabres sign Buffalo native Trevor Kuntar to contract

Kuntar had been playing on an AHL contract in Rochester

Buffalo, N.Y. (WGR Sports Radio 550) - The Buffalo Sabres have signed Rochester Americans forward Trevor Kuntar to a NHL contract. Kuntar, who is from Buffalo played 24 games with the Amerks scoring nine goals and four assists for 13 points.

After playing three years at Boston College, Kuntar spent two seasons with the Providence Bruins. The Boston Bruins had drafted the 24-year-old in the third round of the 2020 Draft. In 148 AHL games he has 22 goals and 23 assists for 45 points. He’s also had 232 minutes in penalties which tells you he’s a physical player.

The contract is a one-year deal worth $775,000. The center played for the Buffalo Junior Sabres growing up.

His dad Les Kuntar played six games in goal for the Montreal Canadiens during the 1993-94 season going 2-2-0 with a 3.18 goals against and .877 save percentage. He also played 21 games for the Amerks in 1996-97 going 6-9-3 with a 3.42 goals against and .889 save percentage.

No news on if Josh Norris is going to be ready to play Thursday in Vancouver against the Canucks. Norris was in warm-up Tuesday in Edmonton, but felt ill and tweaked a muscle so he was pulled from the lineup. If he can’t go, Kuntar could get his first NHL game.
