The Buffalo Sabres brought the heat in the second night of their double-header with the Philadelphia Flyers at the Wells Fargo Center on Tuesday.
However, no amount of heat could get them a goal against Flyers goaltender Brian Elliott. Buffalo racked up 40 shots on goal on Philadelphia, but it was all for naught in a 3-0 loss.
Let's take a look at three observations from the game:
1.) Sabres had plenty of chances to score
While they were held off the score sheet, Buffalo can't say it's because they didn't try.
The Sabres sent a whopping 40 shots on goal and created 12 high-danger scoring chances in all situations, according to Natural Stat Trick's live game stat tracking.
For the most part, the Sabres were able to control play throughout the entire night, but they couldn't get that to translate to anything meaningful.
2.) Hutton injury brings shaky situation in net
Sabres goaltender Carter Hutton took a nasty hit to the head from Flyers defenseman Ivan Provorov toward the start of the second period. He was able to play through for some time before being taken out of the game at the start of the third period.
Hutton turned away 19-of-20 shots he faced before being forced to exit the game for Sabres backup goaltender Jonas Johansson.
A long-term injury to Hutton places the Sabres in a shakier situation in net, that was already made shaky with Linus Ullmark's unexpected removal from the lineup before Monday night's game due to personal reasons.
3.) Sabres shut out on the power play again
They score one game, then get shut on the next.
Last night, the Sabres figured it out on the power play, but tonight, they once again got shut out on the man advantage for the 2nd time in their four games this season. The Sabres had three chances up a man and were only able to muster six shots on the power play, including just one shot with a 5-on-3 power play that lasted :59 early in the second period.
