Firefighters battled a small brush fire Thursday in Hanover Township. According to reports, the fire was reported just after 4pm, fueled by dry conditions and winds, burning between three to four acres near Oak Lawn Cemetery. The wooded area was being used as a dumping ground for the cemetery's yard waste, which created prime conditions for dry vegetation. Crews from multiple departments responded, working to contain the flames. The Hanover Township Fire Department was assisted by Nanticoke City, Laurel Run Borough, Wright Township, and the DCNR's forestry department. An elevated risk of wildfires is in effect for Luzerne and Columbia counties due to warm weather and dry conditions.conditions.
