SALEM TOWNSHIP, PA — First responders from Luzerne County were dispatched to the Susquehanna Steam Electric Plant just after 7 p.m. last night following reports of an explosion.

The incident caused an immediate emergency response, but plant officials quickly confirmed to first responders that the sound and flash were the result of a flare from standard off-gassing—a normal industrial process where accumulated gases are safely released into the air.

Officials at the nuclear facility stressed that the event posed no injuries to workers and there is no threat to the public. Plant operations appear to be stable following the incident.
