Luzerne County Council voted eight to three on Tuesday night against introducing an ordinance that would have restricted local cooperation with federal immigration authorities. The proposed legislation sought to limit the circumstances under which county employees and resources could be used to assist Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

The meeting drew a large crowd to the council chambers, where dozens of residents provided public testimony. Supporters of the ordinance argued that the measure was necessary to protect immigrant communities and ensure that local tax dollars are not used for federal enforcement tasks. Conversely, opponents expressed concerns that the ordinance would undermine public safety and legal compliance.

Under the defeated proposal, county staff would have been prohibited from investigating a person's citizenship status or complying with ICE detainers unless legally mandated by a court order. Following the lopsided vote, the current policy remains in place, requiring county employees to cooperate with federal officials regarding citizenship and immigration inquiries.
