WILKES-BARRE, PA — Luzerne County Council is scheduled to discuss a proposed resolution during Tuesday's work session that would formally request the county Election Board to evaluate adding more mail ballot drop box locations ahead of the Nov. 3 general election.
The resolution was initiated by Council Chairman Jimmy Sabatino, who argued that having only two primary drop box locations in the county is insufficient for voters.
Currently, Luzerne County operates mail-in ballot drop boxes inside two county-owned facilities:
- Hazleton: Broad Street Business Exchange Building on West Broad Street.
- Wilkes-Barre: Penn Place Building at 20 N. Pennsylvania Avenue, as well as an additional box inside the County Election Bureau located on the second floor.
While the five-member citizen Election Board holds the sole legal authority over the final deployment and placement of drop boxes, Sabatino noted that the resolution is intended to encourage the board to explore additional locations while sufficient time remains before general election ballots are distributed to voters.
If approved by council, the resolution would ask the board to weigh factors such as geographic accessibility across the county, security requirements, operational feasibility, and associated maintenance costs.
