SCHUYLKILL HAVEN, PA — A packed auditorium at Penn State Schuylkill set the stage Tuesday night as Republican incumbent Congressman Dan Meuser and Democratic challenger Rachel Wallace faced off in their first and only debate for Pennsylvania’s 9th Congressional District seat.
With the John E. Morgan Auditorium filled to capacity, the candidates tackled pressing issues impacting district voters, offering sharply contrasting visions on health care, cost-of-living pressures, energy costs, and regional economic policy.
Throughout the broadcast, data center developments in Northeastern Pennsylvania emerged as a key flashpoint. Wallace voiced strong opposition to new data center construction, accusing Meuser of supporting corporate tax incentives for developers at the expense of local communities and agricultural interests. Meuser countered by denying the allegations, defending his legislative record on farm support, and noting his commitment to rural economic development.
Health care access and inflation further divided the candidates, with Wallace criticizing federal spending cuts affecting Medicaid and rural hospital funding, while Meuser advocated for expanded Health Savings Accounts and association health plans to reduce market costs.
Both candidates are making their final pitches to voters ahead of the general election.
