Authorities discovered hundreds of animals living in what officials described as absolutely horrific conditions at a double-block home on the 100 block of Jones Street in Wilkes-Barre. The Pocono Wildlife Rehabilitation and Education Center responded to the scene after receiving an urgent request from Wilkes-Barre Animal Control to assist with a massive animal hoarding and cruelty investigation. Upon arrival, rescuers found nearly 400 pigeons alongside a variety of other animals, including cats, rats, and mice, all confined within the residence.
The scale of the neglect has taken a significant toll on the animals involved, with experts determining that 12 of the rescued pigeons are in such poor condition that they will have to be euthanized. Janine Tancredi, the Executive Director of Pocono Wildlife, stated that the situation is the worst case of animal abuse she has witnessed in her career. As the investigation into the property continues, the surviving animals are being evaluated and treated by wildlife specialists and local animal welfare advocates.
